The Year of No Holding Back – Who Will You Ask?

“There’s no harm in hoping for the best as long as you’re prepared for the worst.” — Stephen King
January is gone, hell almost February too, the holiday haze has cleared, and now we’re staring down the rest of 2025 with all its possibilities, pitfalls, and, hopefully, triumphs. The question is—what will you do with it? More importantly, what will you throw aside to make it happen? Fear? Doubt? That nagging voice in your head whispering you’re not good enough?
For me, this year is about pushing beyond hesitation. Dark Matter is out in the world, no longer just an idea rattling around in my head but something real, something people are actually reading. That in itself is terrifying. But why stop there? This is the year to double down, to reach further.
So, I did something bold. I wrote a letter to Stephen King.
Yeah, that Stephen King. The master of horror, the man who shaped my love of dark fiction, the author who wrote On Writing—the book that cracked my creative inhibitions wide open and gave me permission to write without fear. I asked him for an endorsement. He may never reply, or he might scrawl “nope” in red ink and send it back. But if I don’t ask, the answer will always be no.
Because, as King himself said:
“There’s no harm in hoping for the best as long as you’re prepared for the worst.”
So, who will you ask?
What’s the thing you’ve been holding back on? Writing a book? Painting? Starting a band? Sending your work to a publisher, an agent, a gallery? Reaching out to someone you admire for advice, support, or just to say, your work means something to me?
This is your year to take the shot. No hesitating. No excuses. No waiting until you “feel ready.”
I dared to ask my hero for help. Now it’s your turn. Who will you reach out to? What bold step will you take? And most importantly, what will you finally give yourself permission to do?
And if reading more dark, mind-bending fiction is on your list this year, Dark Matter is waiting for you. Order your copy now and step into the shadows with me.
